“You are my Voice I am your Eyes”
“Students welcome to Orihara High School.” All the students screamed and cheered in their opening ceremony.
Unmei a 17 year old girl, hazel eyes, short hair, chubby cheeks, looks about two years younger than her actual age blinked several times trying to get her vision clear.
“CALL AN AMBULANCE!” Was the last thing Unmei heard after hitting the floor and before her body shut down.
“What’s wrong with my daughter?” Lian, Unmei’s mother, in her late 30s asked the doctor concerned.
“We don’t know what caused her to collapse. Everything with your daughter seems perfectly fine. None of that we made came out bad.” Dr. Shoo, a man in his late 50s, gray hair with glasses tried to explain to the worried mother.
“Then, why did it happen?” The mother asked with a tone a little higher. “Are you sure she’s okay?”
“Ma’am it could’ve been caused by stress. We are also trying to figure it out, so just give us some time.” The doctor said.
Unmei opened her eyes. She looked around the hospital room. The room was plain boring and white, the door was in front of her bed, there was a window to the left of her bed with blue curtains and a red couch next to it.
Unmei turned around when she heard the door open. A nurse walked inside and smiled. “Hello Unmei, how do you feel?” Unmei opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out. Her voice had vanished.
“What’s wrong?” The nursed asked.
Unmei pointed at her throat. “It hurts?” The nurse asked. Unmei nodded no. “You need water?” Unmei looked around and got paper and pencil that were next to her in a table and she wrote. ‘My voice is gone.’
“Let me call the doctor.” The nurse said as she left the room, leaving the worried Unmei alone.
“Dr. Shoo! We have a problem with Unmei!” The nurse informed. Dr. Shoo got up and left the room followed by Lian and Unmei nurse.
Unmei had tears in her eyes. Dr. Shoo checked her throat but nothing seemed to be wrong.
“Unmei, try to speak.” Dr. Shoo told Unmei.
Unmei tried to speak but no sound came out. Her mom hugged her daughter and Dr. Shoo said “Her throat and vocal cords are working fine. We’ll run some more tests on her. Maybe we missed something.”
“Don’t worry Unmei, everything’s going to be fine, okay?” Lian said trying to comfort her daughter.
After several hours the test were done and Unmei was sent back to her room. She went to the front of the window. The sky was dark lighted by the stars and moon. A tear escaped Unmei’s eye and rolled down her check like a rain drop.
“Why did this happen to me?” Unmei asked herself.
The door opened and Lian stepped inside Unmei didn’t bother to turn around and look at who had entered, she just stared at the distance.
“Unmei?”
Unmei turned around. Her face was sad and wet, a few more tears had made there way out of her eyes.
Lian hugged her daughter, “Honey everything’s going to be fine you just need to stay strong.” Her mother said.
A shooting star passed by the sky. Unmei closed her eyes. “Please help me understand why this is happening to me.”
Days went by and her voice had not returned. Unmei was frustrated, she didn’t know what to do, she didn’t want to spend her last yeas of high school in a hospital, she wanted to do something with life, she wanted to be someone.
One day while she was doing her usual routine around the hospital which was to walk around and remember why she was there her vision got blurry. She stopped and tried to get her vision clear. Her knees grew weak and her body started to ache all over. Her body then collapsed to the floor and pain struck through her whole body, she suppressed the pain not wanting anyone to know until it was gone.
A nurse hurried to her. “Are you okay?” The nursed asked worried. Unmei looked up and half smiled before she left. She kept the whole thing to herself not wanting to worry her mother since she thought it was just that one time.
She went to her special place, a place with a wooden fence around it. It was surrounding a grassy place with a tree and a swing in the tree. It was outside the hospital close to the children’s play area it was her special place.
The girl decided to lay on the grass and listen to the wind whisper. The wind and sky made her forget why she was there.
Unmei’s eyes opened when she heard a beautiful piano melody coming from the inside of the white building in front of her. She sat up and decided to follow the melody.
She followed the melody through white hallways, hallways that made her remember why she was there.
She followed the melody to a room with a star in the middle. She opened the door just a little and peeked inside. She saw a boy, pale, wavy hair, dark brown eyes, around her age, his skin looked silky and soft.
When the door opened, because of Unmei’s clumsiness, the boy stopped playing.
“Who’s there?” The pale boy asked.
He got a blind stick out and Unmei thought, “He’s blind?”
A nurse went with him and Unmei got up, “Unmei?”
“Who’s there?” The pale boy asked the nurse.
“Inoo its Unmei, she didn’t answer you because she’s mute.” The nurse explained.
Inoo walked forward and smiled, “You scared me there. I’m Inoo Kei, nice to meet you.” The nurse smiled, “Inoo her name is Unmei Irie.”
Unmei got the boys left hand and with her index finger traced Nice to meet you. Inoo smiled, “You’re a smart girl.” The nurse smiled, “I’ll come back at the same time.” The nurse said as she left the room.
“Unmei?” Unmei looked at Inoo, “Would you mind being my eyes?” Unmei got his hand and they started to walk. “I guess you wouldn’t.”
Unmei dragged him to her special place and helped him sit down and then she sat next to him. She got his hand and traced Inoo, don’t you wonder why this happened to us?
Inoo smiled, “So many times I’ve asked “Why me? Why me who has a dream? Why me and not all those criminals?” And I came to the conclusion that everything has a reason, weather it’s a good or a bad thing. We may not know why, but that’s just the way it is. You know I wanted to be a professional singer and pianist and I know I will make that happen. Life gave you and me a challenge and that only makes us stronger. We may not be complete but we can’t give up.”
“He’s right, there is a reason for this, right?” Unmei thought.
Inoo smiled. “Trust me somewhere out there, there’s someone who is suffering more than we are, and some do fall, but they try. When you are sick you look at life in a complete different way, some positive and some negative, but I believe that life always has something good in the end. When you are sick you realize that life is beautiful.”
It was mid December, a white blanket of snow covered the floors outside. That day Inoo and Unmei decided to visit their special place.
Unmei’s vision got blurry once again, it had stopped for about a week but it had returned. She went with Inoo, got his hand and traced Inoo I’ll make you a promise
“What is it?” asked Inoo.
I promise to help you see, and the help you make your dream true.
“O-Okay” Inoo said a little worried since sounded sick.
A bright red liquid fell to the white and pure snow tainting it with its color. Unmei got her nose and her index and middle finger had blood. She got his soft hand and traced Promise me you will be the greatest pianist and greatest singer.
“I promise. Is everything alright Unmei?”
Unmei smiled and got his hand once again.
Everything’s fine, don’t worry. You can go inside on your own, right? I need to go somewhere.
“Yes go ahead, take care.” Unmei kissed Inoo’s left cheek, a tear escaped her eye. “Bye Inoo.” She thought.
Unmei struggled and she made it inside the building which she considered a second home. Her body gave up and she hit the floor. Pain struck through her entire body.
A nurse saw her and rushed to her aid. “Get a doctor!” The nurse screamed.
“Doctor what’s wrong with my daughter?” Lian asked concerned.
“We don’t know, we are still trying to figure her whole situation out. This is the first time we’ve dealt with something like this.” Dr. Shoo answered.
“Is she going to be alright?” asked the concerned mother.
Dr. Shoo stayed quiet. Tear formed Lian’s eyes. “Is she? Doctor!”
Unmei opened her eyes, she was back in her room. She took her breathing mask off and sat up. She got a piece of paper and a pencil that were left on the table next to her bed. With tears in her eyes she started to write letters to her mother and Inoo.
It was getting hard to keep the grip of the pen. Everything was in pain she just wanted someone to stop it. A mixture of tears and blood fell in Inoo’s letter tainting it with it’s ugly and dark, dark color.
The pencil fell to the floor, she just couldn’t stand the pain anymore, she just wanted to scream. It was getting harder to breath and her heart rate started to drop. The machine started making beeping sounds that echoed in her head.
A nurse rushed inside. “Call Dr. Shoo.” She exclaimed.
Unmei was put in intensive care.
Unmei’s mom from side to side, not wanting to hear bad news.
Dr. Shoo stepped outside the room.
“How is she?” Lian asked. Dr. Shoo shook his head and answered. “Her brain has shut down. The only thing keeping her alive are the machines connected to her, only a miracle will wake her up, I’m sorry.”
Lian’s legs grew numb. She fell in her knees whipping and crying. “Why? Why Unmei?”
Back in the room Lian made a fist when she saw Unmei’s peaceful boy lying on bed. A nurse went inside, “Ma’am your daughter wrote you this.” Lian got the folded paper the nurse was holding in her hands and it said:
Mom, I’m sorry I made you worry. If you are reading this then that means I’m dead or I am border line on dying. I’ve been dying slowly and I knew all this time that this day was coming an I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, but I have one last wish, and I would like you to make it happen.
Lian broke into tears.
Mom my last wish is for you to give my eyes to Inoo. A part of me will live within him, so please mom give a part of me to him. He helped me understand why this happened to me. He gave me the answer to this question. Mom I want you to know that even tough I only live for 17 years I am happy and I want to thank you for being my mom. Mom I will always love you, don’t forget that.
Tears fell to the paper. “You’ve done a great job Unmei, fighting this battle on your own, it’s time to be free.”
Dr. Shoo got took Unmei’s breathing mask off and all the machines connected to her. “Unmei I’m proud of you, say HI to your father for me in heaven, okay?” Lian said in between sobs.
Unmei’s heart rate dropped until it reached zero. Lian’s heart broke into tinny pieces, she had lost her only child.
“Inoo, we found eyes for you.” Ao, Inoo’s mother, around her 30s, wavy hair, dark brown eyes, exclaimed happily.
Dr. Shoo went inside. “Operation is tomorrow.” Inoo smiled. “Thank you doctor.”
“Lian?” Lian turned around to face Dr. Shoo, “You made a good decision.” “I just want my daughter’s last wish to come true. Lian brushed Unmei bangs away from her peaceful yet dead face. “Unmei be happy in heaven.”
Inoo smiled. “I’ll surprise Unmei tomorrow.” A shooting star passed in the sky. “Ah, a shooting star.” The nurse said. Inoo closed his eyes.
Ao went with Lian and Unmei. She looked at Unmei, got her hand and said, “Unmei thank you.” Lian smiled, “May I visit you once in a while?” Ao, smiled. “Of course Unmei is a part of us now.” “Thank you.”
The next day Inoo was prepared for the operation. It was about 7 hours later when the operation had ended.
“We’ll take the bandages of in three weeks.” Dr. Shoo said.
“Okay, thanks.” Ao said while entering Inoo’s room.
“Inoo you’ll be able to see in three weeks.” Ao said happily.
Three weeks passes without Inoo knowing anything about Unmei.
It was January now, the doctor carefully took Inoo’s bandages off.
“Okay, blink until you get your vision clear.” Dr. Shoo instructed Inoo. Inoo did what he was told and then his vision was clear. “I can see,” He said.
Lian went inside, “Inoo?” Inoo looked at Lian, “Yes?” Lian handed him the letter. “Please read it.” Inoo opened the folded paper and saw the blood stain, “What’s this?”
“This is from the person who gave you your vision back Inoo.” Ao told her on.
Inoo blinked and read:
Inoo, it’s me Unmei. I’m sorry I left you in the cold snow the last day we met. Remember when we first met? I scared you and I didn’t properly apologized, so I’m sorry. This past few day, weeks, minutes, seconds hours, I spend with you were great and I thank you for that. Inoo I’m sorry but these past few days I’ve been dying slowly. Remember when I asked you why this was happening to us? Well I found the answer to that question.
Tears filled Inoo’s eyes threatening to roll down any second.
It just like you said, things do happen for a reason. I got sick from this disease to save your eye sight. If you are reading this it means I’m dead and my last day was granted. The promise I made you was my last wish, Inoo you gave me a voice, a voice only for me, so I gave you my eyes. Inoo thank you, thank you for everything and remember You are my Voice I am you Eyes. Please keep your promise I want you to shine just like a shooting star, okay?
Inoo broke into tears, he ran his left hand through his left eye and Lian said, “Inoo thank you, you made my daughters last days her best.”
“She’s part of me now, I will cherish this gift just like I cherish life.” The pale boy said.
Inoo closed his eyes, “Unmei I will always be your voice just like you will always be my eyes, thank you.”
